As India makes strides towards greener growth, transitioning from fossil fuels becomes imperative for sustainable practices, fueling the rise of electric and hybrid vehicles. This widespread adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) not only increases the demand for skilled professionals but also opens up diverse and promising career opportunities. The growing EV boom necessitates qualified electrical engineers to innovate, develop, and maintain the expanding infrastructure supporting this transition.

A 2023 study by the Indian Institute of Toxicology Research (IITR) identifies a leading cause of air pollution— the surge in automobiles, contributing to a decline in air quality scores. In response to the escalating demand for electric transportation, academic institutions are introducing specialized programs in EVs. These programs not only contribute to new research domains but also generate skilled manpower for the evolving industries. Addressing this need, the Department of Electrical Engineering at IIT Roorkee introduced the MTech in EV technology in 2022, aligning with the urgency of sustainable and greener growth in the country.

Exploring Electric Vehicle Technology: Interdisciplinary Foundations towards Greener growth

This comprehensive course thoroughly explores essential electric vehicle subsystems, including EVs, Energy Storage Techniques, Charging Infrastructure, Control Systems, and Automobile Engineering for EVs. In the MTech program, students actively engage in early thesis projects, acquiring valuable hands-on experience in system development within the electric vehicle landscape. As standalone systems, electric vehicles seamlessly integrate various engineering disciplines, such as Electrical, Mechanical, Computer Science,  Electronics and Communication, Materials, Chemical, and even Civil Engineering for new infrastructure. Interdisciplinary research plays a pivotal role in ensuring effective system coordination.

Consequently, researchers are at the forefront of spearheading advancements in battery chemistry, motor design, power electronics, hydrogen-based EVs, fast charging solutions, and vehicle-to-vehicle communication. This dynamic approach positions students for a holistic understanding and active involvement in the rapidly evolving field of electric vehicle technology As a standalone systems, electric vehicle integrate various engineering disciplines, such as Electrical, Mechanical, Computer Science, Electronics and Communication, Materials, Chemical, and even Civil Engineering for new infrastructure. Interdisciplinary research is crucial for ensuring seamless system coordination.
